NIRU Crowns AI Hackathon Winners as Kenya Boosts Innovation

The National Intelligence Research University (NIRU) has announced winners of its 2025 National AI Hackathon, highlighting Kenya’s growing pipeline of tech solutions for jobs, security, and economic growth. Caroline Gakii, Daniel Maitethia, and Ezekiel Otieno from Meru University of Science and Technology won the top prize of KSh 2 million for developing a low-cost AI-powered digital microscope to improve cancer and malaria diagnosis. Joshua Radula of Strathmore University emerged second with an AI sign language translator, while Kelvin Mulama placed third with a financial fraud detection system. Nairobi county government start demolition to pave way for drainage

The County Government has commenced the demolition of illegal structures built on drainage systems, waterways, riparian land, and all developments contributing to flooding within Nairobi. All residents are required to immediately and voluntarily remove any structures erected on drainage lines, blocked waterways, riverbanks, and riparian reserves. Encroachment on these critical areas has severely compromised the city’s drainage capacity, directly contributing to flooding and placing millions of lives at risk. This is a grave and unacceptable violation that will not be tolerated. Any structure found obstructing drainage systems or built on protected areas will be demolished without further notice or negotiation. Enforcement operations will continue and intensify until all illegal developments are cleared and order is fully restored. Kenyatta University scores big on the global stage

Dr Jane Kamau of the Department of Exercise, Sports and Science has been appointed to the prestigious UNESCO Chair in Inclusive and Sustainable Physical Education and Sports for a four-year term. Rescue Teams Intensify Search for Grade 9 Pupil Swept Away in Nairobi West.

The young student, who was enrolled at Shadrack Kimalel Junior School, was reportedly swept away by fast-moving storm water yesterday at around 10:00am following heavy rains that pounded parts of Nairobi.  The Nairobi City County Government Rescue and Disaster Management Team, working alongside the Kenya Red Cross, is conducting an ongoing search for the body of Grade 9 pupil John Wambua. The tragic incident occurred as the minor was making his way home when he was overwhelmed by the strong current. Rescue teams have been combing through drainage channels and nearby sewer lines since yesterday, but the body has not yet been recovered.
