Tears of joy after release of Human rights activist Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo

Two Kenyan human rights activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, have been released after being missing for more than a month in Uganda.

They were abducted in early October while participating in campaign activities for Ugandan presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. They were reportedly seized by armed men at a petrol station in Kampala shortly after attending one of Kyagulanyi’s rallies.

Their disappearance sparked regional concern and calls for accountability from rights organizations in both Kenya and Uganda, who accused Ugandan security agencies of orchestrating the abduction.

Family members confirmed their release on Friday, saying the two were in good health but shaken by the ordeal. Details about where they were held or the conditions of their detention remain unclear.

The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had been in contact with Ugandan authorities during the activists’ disappearance and welcomed their safe return, urging respect for cross-border human rights and political freedoms.

Bobi Wine’s campaign team also condemned the abductions, calling them part of a wider pattern of intimidation against opposition supporters ahead of Uganda’s forthcoming elections.

Human rights groups have since demanded an independent investigation into the incident, warning that such acts threaten freedom of expression and regional cooperation.
