Mukuru Kwa Jenga Residents Decry Illegal Dumpsite in Zone 48

Residents of Mukuru Kwa Jenga’s Zone 48 in Nairobi County are raising alarm over what they describe as an illegal and dangerous dumpsite that has taken over their living spaces.

According to the locals, heaps of uncollected garbage have continued to pile up for months, posing serious health and environmental risks. The dumpsite, situated right next to their homes, has become a breeding ground for rats and a source of foul smell, making the area nearly uninhabitable.

Slums Outreach Program coordinator Eric Ambuche condemned the situation, terming it a clear sign of leadership failure within the Nairobi City County government.

“This garbage is a symbol of a broken system. Rats, foul smell, and constant health hazards have become part of everyday life here, despite Governor Sakaja’s promises to improve Nairobi’s cleanliness and living standards,” Ambuche said.

Residents now fear possible outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and respiratory infections, especially among children who play near the dumpsite.

They are calling on the county government to act urgently by clearing the waste, designating a proper refuse collection schedule, and enforcing regulations against illegal dumping.
