Government condoles with Elgeyo marakwet Mudslide victims

The Government of kenya deeply regrets the loss of lives and destruction of property resulting from the ongoing rains, and extends heartfelt sympathies and condolences to all affected families — especially those who lost their loved ones following last night’s tragic mudslide at Machember Village in Mukurtwo Location, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

So far, 15 deaths have been confirmed, while 25 others have been rescued from the mud with serious injuries. Ten victims have been airlifted to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized treatment, while six others are being evacuated to safer areas. Efforts to locate 30 persons still unaccounted for are continuing at full scale.

According to government spokesman Dr.Isaack Mwaura the Government is providing all necessary humanitarian assistance. Police and military helicopters have been deployed, and medical supplies and equipment dispatched from the Moi Airbase to support ongoing rescue and evacuation efforts. Despite challenges posed by continued heavy downpours, operations will proceed until all affected families are safely relocated.

The Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service, the Ministry of Interior, and the National Disaster Operations Centre, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross, are fully engaged on the ground to ensure all affected persons are rescued and protected from further harm.

Once again, the Government conveys its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and urges all residents in high-risk areas to move to safer ground until the intensity of the rainfall subs.
