Soipan Tuya Defends Community Land Reforms, Hails stakeholders role

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving long-standing community land challenges, saying key recommendations from the recent Community Land Summit will be fully actualized at the cabinet level.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement forum, Soipan Tuya praised civil society organisations for their critical role in advocating for community land rights, conflict resolution, and public awareness.

“I want to commend civil society groups for standing with communities in protecting their land rights and pushing for policies that promote fairness and justice,” Tuya said.

She noted that land compensation remains a major concern in many regions, often fueling inter-community conflicts. The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the need for structured compensation frameworks to address grievances arising from compulsory land acquisition for development projects.

Tuya also called for the strengthening of alternative land adjudication mechanisms to ease the backlog of court cases and provide faster, community-based dispute resolution.

On gender inclusion, the Defence CS underscored the importance of empowering women in community land leadership. “There is a critical need to fully include women in leadership and decision-making processes on community land matters. Their voice is essential for sustainable solutions,” she stated.
